'Conversion' - Recycle Group
Curated by James Putnam
Collateral Project of 56th Venice Biennale
Presented by the Moscow Museum of Modern Art
9 May- 22 November 2015
Site-specific installation of sculptures and bas-reliefs by Recycle Group (Andrey Blokhin & Georgy Kuznetsov) that proposes that the globalization of information networks and the cult of new technologies are in some ways comparable to the historic conversion to Christianity.
Their sculptures and bas-reliefs in modern materials take on the appearance of ancient monuments that display the ravages of time, like artifacts from some lost civilization. Although the forms and compositions of this project are influenced by traditional Christian iconography, they introduce contemporary motifs like app logos, cell phone masts and a giant Facebook emblem. A series of bas-rliefs mounted on scaffolding depict figures of 'Neo-Apostles' who are perceived as the bearers of a new sacred knowledge manifested in a stream of virtual informatin no longer located in the heavens but instead in the intangible space of 'The Cloud'.
