To coincide with the 60th Venice Biennale, Rob and Nick Carter created a special project at Hotel Metropole, Venice. The London based artists’ work explores the intersections of the analog and the digital realms, employing diverse mediums such as camera-less photography, painting, installation, neon, sculpture, and time-based media. Their work has been exhibited internationally at some major public museums and is in the collections of the Mauritshuis, The Hague, Frans Hals Museum, Haarlem and Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
The exhibition includes work from their celebrated ‘Transforming’ series, that comprise slow-moving, looped films based on the interpretation of historic paintings from the Dutch Golden Age of 17th century still life and Vanitas paintings.
In addition is their extraordinary bronze sculpture of a Rat inspired by the pen and ink drawings of Jacob de Gheyn II (c.1565-1629). Also a specially commissioned black glass tulip inspired by a watercolour by Judith Leyster (1609-60) that has been made in the Berengo Studio, Murano renowned for it’s work with major contemporary artists.
Hotel Metropole is associated with Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) because the building on its original site was where he composed his masterpieces. Through its history the hotel has had many famous guests including Sigmund Freud, Marcel Proust, and Thomas Mann.
Part of the Metropole’s ongoing contemporary art series organized in association with the Gervasuti Foundation, London-Venice and curated by James Putnam.
